Joan Adams Mondale was born in Eugene, Oregon on August 8, 1930. She was one of three daughters of Eleanor Jane (Hall) Adams and Reverend John Maxwell Adams. Dr. Adams was a Presbyterian minister and for many years was chaplain at Macalester College in St. Paul. Joan attended public schools in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the Summit School (high school) in St. Paul.
